Where Will I Live If I Can No Longer Stay in My Home?

Understanding Senior Living Options Before You Need Them

Joanna Condé · REALTOR® · HomeSmart

Most of us would prefer to remain in our own homes for as long as possible.

Our homes are familiar. Our neighbors are friends. We know where everything is, and we value our independence.

But what happens if living at home becomes too difficult, too expensive, or no longer safe?

Where would we go? What are our choices? And how much will it cost?

These are questions worth asking long before a decision becomes necessary.

On Thursday, November 12, Thoughtful Thursdays will welcome Barbara Moehling of Regal Transitions, a specialist in senior placement and referral services, to discuss the many living arrangements available to older adults.

Among the options to be discussed are independent living communities, assisted living facilities, residential group homes, memory care, and hospice services.

Each serves different needs, and the differences can be significant. Barb will explain how each level of care is determined and who makes that decision. Care level affects costs.

Costs vary considerably, and understanding what services are included is essential.

Planning ahead allows decisions based on specific preferences rather than circumstances. When a decision is made during a medical emergency or family crisis, choices may be more limited and stressful.

This program is not just for people considering a move. It is equally valuable for adult children, caregivers, friends, and neighbors who may someday be called upon to help someone else.
